First draft podcast
First Draft began in 2014 as a way to spur conversations between authors, primarily writers of young adult fiction. Over the intervening years, First Draft has featured honest, inspiring conversations with New York Times bestsellers like Divergent author Veronica Roth and The Red Queen author Victoria Aveyard, National Book Award winner Robin Benway, Newberry Award winner Dan Santat, and Printz Award winner Nina LaCour.
An organic shift began in 2018, when I (host Sarah Enni) spoke with Andy Weir, New York Times bestselling author of adult science fiction novel The Martian; Michael DiMartino, creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender; Maret Orliss, Associate Director of Events Programming for the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books; Bea and Leah Koch, owners of the first brick-and-mortar romance book store; and screenwriter and popular podcaster John August. Though they covered storytelling techniques outside the traditional publishing background, I found so much relatable wisdom in those conversations. It made me realize that artists across all forms are more similar than they are different, and we can all learn from each other.
As the podcast heads into its fifth year in 2019, I’m broadening the scope of the podcast to include essayists, podcasters, songwriters, and other storytellers. While the heart of First Draft remains the same--the sharing of ideas and fostering empathy through human stories--it will feature new, exciting, and diverse voices within various creative fields that have something to offer everyone.
